What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?
A 20-yard dumpster holds about 7 to 8 pickup-truck loads. At 4 feet tall, it's still easy to load by hand from the ground. The 20-yard is the most flexible size for light, bulky debris, though concrete, dirt and brick are not allowed in it.
Typical jobs that fit:
- A kitchen remodel: cabinets, counters, drywall and flooring
- A single-layer roof up to about 25 squares
- A whole-house declutter before a move
- Carpet, pad and furniture from a 3-bedroom house
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Bulky items like sofas leave gaps, so they take more room than their size suggests.

Will a 20-yard dumpster hold my roof without going over 3 tons?
A 20-yard dumpster includes 3 tons, which matches about 25 squares of single-layer shingles. With 80-pound bundles and 3 bundles per square, one square weighs 240 pounds. 25 squares × 240 pounds = 6,000 pounds, which is exactly 3 tons.
Use your own bundle weight from the wrapper or the manufacturer's spec sheet. If the scale ticket shows 3.4 tons net, you pay for 0.4 tons, or 800 pounds: $30 at $75 per ton. A two-layer roof of the same size weighs about 6 tons, so book a 30-yard or plan a swap.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?
A 20-yard dumpster needs a spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, the length of a standard driveway in front of a two-car garage. The truck needs about 60 feet of straight approach to slide it off.
Our drivers set wooden boards under the steel rails so the dumpster doesn't crack or scratch concrete or asphalt. Keep it off septic lids, sprinkler heads and soft grass. Street placement may need a city permit; the driveway placement guide covers both.
Is the 20-yard too small or too big for my job?
Choose the 15-yard for a garage or a roof under about 15 squares, and keep the extra driveway length. Choose the 30-yard for an addition, a full gut or a two-layer roof. It uses the same 22 × 8 ft footprint as the 20-yard; it's 2 feet taller.
What's included with every 20-yard rental?
Delivery, pickup, 7 days and 3 tons come with the 20-yard. After that: $25 per extra day, $75 per ton over, $50 per tire, mattress or Freon appliance, and $125 if the truck can't reach the spot. Full details are on the dumpster rental cost guide.

20-yard dumpster questions
How many tons does a 20-yard dumpster hold?
The 20-yard rental includes 3 tons. Extra weight is $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket, so going 500 pounds over costs $18.75.
Can I put concrete or dirt in a 20-yard dumpster?
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand aren't allowed in the 20-yard. A full 20-yard of concrete would be far over the truck's legal road weight. Use a 10 or 15-yard filled halfway.
Is a 20-yard enough for a kitchen remodel?
A typical kitchen gut fits in a 20-yard dumpster with room left for flooring from the next room. Add a bathroom or two and look at the 30-yard.
How big is a 20-yard dumpster in feet?
The 20-yard is 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall on the outside. Plan for about 60 feet of straight approach for the truck.
Can I keep a 20-yard dumpster for two weeks?
Seven days are included and each extra day is $25, so keeping it 14 days adds $175. A swap makes more sense if it fills up first.
