Dumpster on Your Driveway: Space, Clearance and Protection
A dumpster needs a hard, level spot as long as the bin (12 to 22 feet), plus about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance for the truck. Our drivers set boards under the rails to protect your driveway. Street placement may need a city permit.

How much driveway space does each dumpster size need?
The 10-yard needs about 12 × 8 feet, the 15-yard about 16 × 7.5 feet, and the 20, 30 and 40-yard all need about 22 × 8 feet. Add a foot or two on each side to walk around it and open car doors.
The three largest share one footprint, so if a 20-yard fits, a 30 or 40-yard fits too. They differ in height: 4, 6 and 8 feet.
| Size | Footprint | Height |
|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12 × 8 ft | 3.5 ft |
| 15-yard | 16 × 7.5 ft | 4.5 ft |
| 20-yard | 22 × 8 ft | 4 ft |
| 30-yard | 22 × 8 ft | 6 ft |
| 40-yard | 22 × 7.5 ft | 8 ft |
What does the delivery truck need to set the dumpster down?
A roll-off truck needs about 60 feet of straight, level approach in line with the drop spot and about 23 feet of overhead clearance while the bed tilts. Low wires, tree limbs, basketball goals and gate arches are the usual blockers.
- Move cars, trailers and trash carts out of the path the night before.
- Unlock gates and tell us any gate code when you book.
- Mark the spot with cones or chalk. You don't need to be home; the driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes ahead.
How do you protect my driveway?
Our drivers place structural wooden boards under the dumpster's metal rollers and rails before setting it down. The boards spread the weight and keep steel off the surface, which prevents cracking and scratching on concrete and asphalt driveways.
Keep the dumpster off septic tank lids, sprinkler heads, water meters and concrete poured in the last few weeks. Tell us about any of these when you book.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster in the street?
Many Texas cities require right-of-way approval for a dumpster in the street, alley or on the curb, while a dumpster on your own driveway usually needs none. Rules, fees and lead times are set by each city.
City pages under service areas list the permit rules we could confirm, such as Dallas and Fort Worth. Check HOA rules too; some limit how many days a dumpster can sit in a driveway.
FAQ
Placement questions
Will a dumpster damage my driveway?
Our drivers set wooden boards under the dumpster's steel rails and rollers to spread the load and prevent cracks and scratches on concrete and asphalt. Keep it off new concrete that hasn't cured.
Can a dumpster go on the street?
A dumpster can usually go on the street with the city's right-of-way approval, which varies by city. Check your city page or call us; driveways avoid the permit question entirely.
How much space does a dumpster truck need?
Plan for about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance. The dumpster itself needs 12 to 22 feet of length depending on size.
What if the driver can't place the dumpster?
If cars, low wires or a locked gate block the spot, the truck can't drop, and a $125 dry-run fee applies. A clear spot and a quick photo of it when you book prevent this.
Can I put a dumpster on my lawn?
Grass is soft and can rut under a loaded dumpster, especially after rain, and it hides sprinkler heads and septic lids. A driveway or hard, level pad is safer.
Not sure your spot works?
Call and describe the driveway or street. We'll tell you which size fits and where the driver will set it.
