What fits in a 30-yard dumpster?
A 30-yard dumpster holds about 10 to 12 pickup-truck loads. The 6-foot walls are high, so plan to load bulky items first and work from a step or the back of a trailer. It suits big jobs with light debris, where space runs out long before the 4 included tons.
Typical jobs that fit:
- A home addition or garage conversion
- A full interior gut of a 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft house
- An estate cleanout with furniture in every room
- Construction framing scrap, packaging and drywall from a new build
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Bulky items like sofas leave gaps, so they take more room than their size suggests.

How do I keep a 30-yard dumpster under 4 tons?
A 30-yard dumpster includes 4 tons, or 8,000 pounds, which bulky, light debris rarely reaches. Furniture, cabinets, framing scrap and packaging fill the space first. Drywall, plaster, tile and wet carpet are what push a 30-yard past 4 tons.
Roofing is the exception. A 30-square, two-layer roof with 80-pound bundles weighs about 30 × 2 × 240 = 14,400 pounds, or 7.2 tons. That's 3.2 tons over, or $240. For a heavy roof, two 20-yard hauls can cost less than one overloaded 30-yard; ask us to price both.

Will a 30-yard dumpster fit where a 20-yard would?
A 30-yard dumpster takes the same 22 × 8 ft spot as our 20-yard, so if a 20-yard fits, a 30-yard fits. The only difference is height: 6 feet instead of 4. Check for low branches over the drop spot, because the truck bed lifts higher to set it down.
Our drivers set wooden boards under the steel rails so the dumpster doesn't crack or scratch concrete or asphalt. Keep it off septic lids, sprinkler heads and soft grass. Street placement may need a city permit; the driveway placement guide covers both.
Is the 30-yard too small or too big for my job?
Drop to the 20-yard if most of the job is roofing or tile, because weight limits come before space. Stay with the 30-yard for bulky, light debris over several days, such as an addition or a full house of furniture. When the 30-yard fills early, a swap restarts the 7 days and 4 tons.
What's included with every 30-yard rental?
Delivery, pickup, 7 days and 4 tons come with the 30-yard. After that: $25 per extra day, $75 per ton over, $50 per tire, mattress or Freon appliance, and $125 if the truck can't reach the spot. Full details are on the dumpster rental cost guide.

30-yard dumpster questions
How many tons are included in a 30-yard dumpster?
The 30-yard rental includes 4 tons. Weight beyond that is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket.
Can I put shingles in a 30-yard dumpster?
Shingles can go in a 30-yard. Watch the weight on heavy roofs: two layers over about 17 squares will pass 4 tons, and a 20-yard plus a swap may cost less.
Is a 30-yard dumpster too tall to load?
The 6-foot walls are harder to throw over than a 20-yard's 4 feet. Load heavy, flat pieces low, break furniture down, and work from a step stool or trailer gate.
Does a 30-yard dumpster need more driveway space than a 20-yard?
A 30-yard needs the same 22 × 8 ft footprint and the same truck approach as a 20-yard. It needs a bit more overhead clearance while the truck sets it down.
Can I put dirt in a 30-yard dumpster?
Dirt, concrete, brick and sand aren't allowed in the 30-yard. Heavy debris is limited to our 10 and 15-yard dumpsters, filled halfway.
