What size dumpster do I need for a cleanout?
A one-car garage or one or two rooms fits a 10-yard dumpster. A packed two-car garage fits a 15-yard. A whole 3-bedroom house with furniture fits a 20-yard, and an estate cleanout with a full garage and attic usually needs a 30-yard. Furniture takes more space than it seems, so round up.
Can I throw away furniture, mattresses and appliances?
Furniture, boxes, clothes, toys and household junk can go in a cleanout dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances with Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers and AC units, are allowed for $50 each because of special processing rules at the landfill. Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are prohibited.
Federal rules require refrigerant to be recovered before an appliance is disposed of (EPA, 40 CFR 82.155). The full list is in what can go in a dumpster.
Will the dumpster hurt my driveway or lawn?
Our drivers set wooden boards under the dumpster's steel rails before setting it down, which keeps it from cracking or scratching concrete and asphalt driveways. Keep it off the lawn, septic lids and sprinkler heads, where a loaded bin can sink or break something.
More in the driveway placement guide.
How do I plan a cleanout so it fits in 7 days?
Sort before the dumpster arrives. Set aside items to sell or donate, pull out banned items such as paint and batteries, and stack what's going near the door. Then the 7 included days go to loading, not sorting. Need more time? Each extra day is $25.
- Break down furniture and flatten boxes to fit more.
- Load heavy items on the floor and spread weight end to end.
- Tarp the dumpster at night so rain and neighbors stay out.
- Call for pickup as soon as you're done.

Home cleanout dumpster questions
How many days do I get for a cleanout?
Seven days are included. Each extra day is $25, so a 10-day cleanout adds $75.
Can I put a couch in the dumpster?
Couches and other furniture can go in. Cut or break them down if you can; whole sofas leave a lot of empty space around them.
Do I have to be home for delivery?
You don't have to be home. Clear and mark the drop spot; the driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arrival.
Can I put a refrigerator in the dumpster?
Refrigerators, freezers and AC units can go in for $50 each because the refrigerant needs special processing.
What can't go in a cleanout dumpster?
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are prohibited. Pull them out while you sort, along with pool chemicals and motor oil.
