What size dumpster do I need for yard waste?
Brush, limbs and leaves from a typical lot fit a 10 or 15-yard dumpster. A fence tear-out plus brush fits a 15-yard. Clearing an overgrown lot or a storm cleanup with whole trees down often needs a 20-yard. Yard waste is bulky, so cut limbs short to pack it tight.
| Yard job | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pruning, leaves, one big tree trimmed | 10-yard | Cut limbs to fit flat |
| Wood fence tear-out, 100–150 ft | 15-yard | Pull concrete post footings into their own load |
| Overgrown lot or storm cleanup | 20-yard | Wet green waste weighs more; tarp before rain |
| Sod, soil, landscape rock | 10 or 15-yard, half full | Counts as heavy debris |
Typical fits. Fence lengths assume standard 6-ft wood privacy fencing.
Can sod, dirt and rocks go in a yard waste dumpster?
Sod, soil, landscape rock, brick edging and concrete footings are heavy debris. They go only in a 10 or 15-yard dumpster, loaded no higher than halfway up the walls. Keep them out of a 20-yard full of brush, or the load can't go on the road.
What can't go in with yard waste?
Lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, fertilizer bags with product, pool chemicals, fuel cans and batteries from yard tools can't go in. Tires found on the property are $50 each. Everything green, wood or fencing can go in.

How do I fit more brush in a dumpster?
Cut limbs to 4 to 6 feet and lay them flat in one direction, alternating butt ends. Stamp down leaves and small brush between layers. Whole branches with the canopy attached trap air and fill a dumpster fast without adding much weight.
Put the dumpster where you can drag brush to it without crossing soft lawn, and keep it level with the rim. More loading tips.

Yard waste dumpster questions
Can tree stumps go in a dumpster?
Ask when you book. Stumps are dense and carry soil, so they're treated like heavy debris and may need a 10 or 15-yard.
Is yard waste heavy?
Dry brush and leaves are light for their size. Wet green waste, sod and soil are heavy, so watch the included tons.
Can I put fence boards and posts in?
Wood fence boards, rails and posts can go in. Concrete footings are heavy debris; knock them off or put them in a separate load.
How long can I keep a yard waste dumpster?
Seven days are included and extra days are $25 each.
